I'm unable to use Reference Retriever to obtain references from PubMed, what should I do to get the PubMed references? |
| Answer:
Due to changes PubMed have made to their servers recently, version 2.1 of RefViz is unable to connect directly to their servers properly. A new version of RefViz, version 2.1.1, is available to address this problem. To install this update, you can simply install this new version over your current version.
Click HERE to download RefViz 2.1.1
After installing this demo, enter your serial number to unlock it to the full version.
Alternately, you can always search directly from PubMed's website, save the search results, and import those results into RefViz.
Follow the steps below to download your search results from the PubMed website and import them into your RefViz program. These steps refer to the PubMed navigation bar on their website, illustrated below:

- Go to the PubMed website in your web browser. The address is http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez.
- Execute your searches to obtain search results (Select "Clipboard"
from the "Send to" drop down in the PubMed navigation bar to save records from multiple
searches as you work).
- On the search results page, select "MEDLINE" in the Display dropdown
menu in the PubMed navigation bar, which is set to Summary by default.
- Choose "File" from the "Send to" drop down
menu in the PubMed navigation bar. This should bring up a dialog box allowing you to save the text file containing your selected references. If you have a popup blocker enabled, such as the one that comes by default from Windows XP Service Pack 2, you may need to disable the popup blocker temporarily to allow the PubMed website to send you the file.
- When the Save dialog box comes up for you to save the file to your computer, click on the "Save" button and save the file somewhere easily
accessible such as your desktop (we recommend saving with the file
extension *.txt).
- In RefViz, go to "File > New View", and select "Using reference file(s)".
- Select the text file that you downloaded and choose "Open".
You have now created a new view from the references downloaded via PubMed's website.
